2014 June 22 Field Trip to the Dunes at Abbotts Lagoon

Sarah Minnick led the Marin Chapter of the CNPS on a field trip to Abbotts Lagoon.
We observed that the native dune mat community near Abbott’s Lagoon is uniquely beautiful and amazing with its many small species thriving in the face of exposure to the harsh, coastal elements.
She explained that special adaptations allow these species to survive. Despite their tenacity, many native dune plants are rare because of limited habitat availability. In their habitat at Point Reyes, however, most of the rare species are locally abundant, and peak bloom for rare wallflower, lupine, or monardella species can be quite impressive.
The following gallery shows some of the many species that we saw.
